Construction & Carpentry SHSM

The Carpentry & Construction (C and C) SHSM gives students an opportunity to specialize, gain qualifications, and plan a career pathway in various areas of the Construction sector while still in high school. The SHSM Program has a number of required components, designed to give students a “leg-up” to pursue post-secondary opportunities in each of the identified sectors, valuing Apprenticeship, College, University and the Workplace.

Certifications

Students will obtain 5 mandatory and 2 Elective certifications during the C and C SHSM.

  • CPR (mandatory)
  • First Aid (mandatory)
  • WHMIS (mandatory)
  • Working at Heights (mandatory)
  • Health and Safety – Basic (mandatory)
  • ICE Training
  • Confined Space
  • Lockout/Tagout Tools
  • Powder Actuated Tool Training

Reach Ahead

Reach ahead opportunities may vary from year to year. Students have the opportunity to interact with faculty and students during specialized tours of McMaster University, Sheridan College, Mohawk College as well as other institutions such as Hamilton Carpenters Union (Local 27) and the College of Carpenters and Trades.

Course Bundle

Over grade 11 and 12, every C and C SHSM student will complete a bundle of 10 total credits:

  • 4 Core SHSM credits (1 or 2 will be mandatory, depending on pathway)
  • 1 related Art, Business or Science credit
  • 2 Co-op credits

Students will also complete either:

  • Two Math credits
  • One English credit

for Apprenticeship, College, University pathway students

OR

  • One Math credit
  • Two English credits

for Workplace pathway students
